About

The name of the town of Alcozar already appears in an infeudation document from 1154, considered to be one of the first written entirely in Castilian, kept in the cathedral of El Burgo de Osma. It owes its historical fame to the battle between the Castilian Count García Fernández and the famous Muslim warlord Almanzor in 995 in the nearby village of Piedra Sillada. The count was defeated, wounded and captured.

Its name derives from the Arabic word “Al-quassir”, which means “the short one”.

This town has one of the best remains of early Romanesque architecture in Soria. The artistic heritage of Alcozar includes the church of San Esteban Protomártir and the ruins of the Romanesque chapel of the Virgen de Vallejo, with remains of Romanesque paintings. Located on the Macerón hill, it has the great peculiarity of being located on the northern flank (overlooking the village) and not on the south, making it a unique example in the province.

All that remains of its castle is the site, as the tower on the hill was built in 1895 with the few remains of the castle. Alcozar also has a Textile Museum, a Rural House Museum and a Forge.

In addition, in Alcozar you can see one of the unique trees of the Ribera del Duero, the Black Poplar of Alcozar.

Alcozar celebrates its fiestas in honour of the Virgen del Vallejo (13 August).

People from Alcozar: alcozareños / alcoceños. Nickname: gatos. It is said that the locals used “mia” or “mia sí” very often when speaking, both to doubt and to deny outright.
