About

This riverside town is located 76 kilometres from Soria (the provincial capital) and 6 kilometres from San Esteban de Gormaz (the municipality to which it belongs).

Of Muslim origin, the famous Cantar del mío Cid mentions the existence of the Torre de Doña Urraca, a tower whose location is unknown, but it is thought to be on a nearby hill.

The places of interest that we can see in this town are:

  • Church of Santa María la Menor, in Gothic style although part of the nave is in Romanesque style. The altarpiece and the Mudejar ceiling stand out.
  • Hermitage of San Mamés de Capadocia, in which there is a carving of San Isidro Labrador and another of the Resurrection of Jesus.
  • Cellar district located in the town centre itself, with a total of 73 underground cellars on this hill.

The remains of a Muslim watchtower, the Visigoth necropolis, its churches, wine cellars and wine presses in ruins are the hallmarks of this Soria town through which the river Pedro (also called Perico) flows.

Aldea de San Esteban celebrates its fiestas in honour of its patron saints San Mamés (martyr of Cappadocia) on the third weekend in August, and San Isidro (15 May).
