About

In 1143, Alfonso VII granted the charter of Sepúlveda and the Community of Villa y Tierra de Roa was created, this being one of its 33 villages. The town of Anguix therefore belonged to the Land of Roa, with the jurisdiction of a lordship exercised by the Duke of Siruela, who appointed its ordinary mayor. At the fall of the Ancien Régime, it became a constitutional town council in the district of Roa and was then called Anguis, belonging to the region of Castilla la Vieja, which in the 1842 Census had 82 households and 324 inhabitants.

The church of the Asuncion de Nuestra Señora of Anguix dates from the 18th century and has a rich Baroque interior. The faithful collaborated devotionally in all the enterprises and felt identified with the actions carried out by the church. This makes us understand how actions were carried out in the town far beyond its possibilities. A good example is the building of the parish church, which involved large sums of money, the payment of which mortgaged the town’s assets and obliged the villagers to contribute with their work and generous donations.

The hermitage of San Juan was built in 1737, is situated on the top of the hill where there are many wine cellars and was restored in 1995 by the “Asociación de Amigos de San Juan”. The locals have a great devotion to the saints present there: San Juan Bautista, La Virgen del Carmen and San Isidro.

In Anguix you can take a magnificent walk with the Entre Vaso y Espaldera trail, hiking through the riverside vineyards.

Anguix celebrates the festivities in honour of the patron saint of San Juan every 24th June and the weekend closest to that date, with a procession in which the majority of the village accompany their patron saint dancing to the rhythm of the dulzainas. They also continue to celebrate the “Pingada del mayo”.

Anguix’s local name: alguiseños / anguileños.
