Aqueduct-Siphon Bridge of the Riaza Canal
Bocos de Duero
About
The Riaza river rises in the province of Segovia and belongs to the Duero river basin (the largest in the Iberian Peninsula), as its tributary.
The Riaza canal was commissioned in 1945 (although it did not become a reality until 1960) and runs for almost 52 km to supply irrigation for crops such as barley, maize and, of course, our riverside vineyards. It takes its waters from the Linares del Arroyo reservoir (Soria) and flows out beyond Olivares de Duero (Valladolid).
As it passes through Bocos, the Riaza Canal crosses our Duero thanks to a siphon formed by two arched pipes, consisting of a concrete structure in the pedestrian walkway part, under a metal arch painted in a striking yellow colour formed by two pipes of one metre in diameter each, braced together, through the interior of which the water of the Riaza Canal crosses the 70 metres of the span formed by the river at this point.
You can see more riverside bridges here.
You can visit this siphon – aqueduct of the Riaza Canal by crossing the right bank of the canal over 100 metres of cultivated land from stage 12 of the renowned GR 14 footpath.
