About

Aranda de Duero is the largest of the Ribera del Duero towns in the province of Burgos. And along with Peñafiel, San Esteban de Gormaz, Peñaranda and Roa de Duero, it is the most emblematic of the Ribera del Duero wines. More than 32,000 inhabitants live on the banks of the river Duero. A business and industrial city, it has not lost the charm of other times in its historic quarter.

Aranda de Duero offers wine tourism enthusiasts a wide range of activities. From visiting its most emblematic monuments such as the façade of the church of Santa María or the church of San Juan (today the Sacred Church of San Juan Museum), the Palace of the Berdugo family , or expanding your knowledge of the world of wine at the Wine Architecture Interpretation Centre(CIAVIN), enjoy the rich and varied gastronomy (headed by the roast suckling lamb) in its many excellent inns and restaurants, stroll along the banks of the Duero, delve into the Middle Ages by visiting the underground cellars that are excavated under the houses in the historic quarter, forming a network of 7 kilometres of tunnels or galleries dug between the 12th and 18th centuries.

For all these reasons, Aranda de Duero has four protected Sites of Cultural Interest (the aforementioned churches of Santa María and San Juan, its justice roll and its ethnological complex of underground cellars). We should also mention the group of bridges that span the great river Duero (the town’s emblem), with the main bridge, which already existed at the beginning of the 14th century, and the medieval bridge of Las Tenerías, which breaks the course of the river Bañuelos, standing out. Aranda is also bathed by another tributary of the Duero, the river Arandilla.

On the other hand, the riverside capital has the first perspective urban map made in the Peninsula, dating from 1503. It is currently in the general archive of Simancas which, since 2017, is part of UNESCO’s “Memory of the World”.

Aranda de Duero has hosted the Ages of Man exhibition (Eucharistia, 2014). It has also been named European City of Wine 2020 by Recevin (Network of European Wine Cities).

The Virgen de las Viñas is the patron saint of Aranda and celebrates her festivities on the second weekend in September. Of great importance is also Aranda’s Easter Week, being a festival declared of “Regional Tourist Interest” in Castilla y León, which includes the “Descent of the Angel” on Easter Sunday.

Aranda de Duero has a TOURISM OFFICE, located in the Plaza Mayor.

The local name for Aranda de Duero is: arandinos . In the past they were also nicknamed “los majos”, in reference to their peculiar way of dressing, in which bright colours predominated.
