Atauta
About
Atauta is a small village in the municipality of San Esteban de Gormaz (Soria), close to an extensive and densely populated holm oak woodland, in a territory characterised by a climate and altitude that are very suitable for planting vines and producing wine, which favoured the development of numerous groups of traditional wine architecture in this area of the Ribera del Duero region of Soria.
In Atauta we can take a walk along its famous crags, from where we can enjoy magnificent views of the parish church of San Pablo, built on the cliff (it is said that a walk around the church relieves toothache). There was also the hermitage of San Bernabé.
From the crags we can also make out the “Hondo” spot, where the “El Plantío” winery complex is located: a veritable treasure trove of wineries, stone wine presses and dovecotes in an orderly alignment, giving rise at first sight to the impression that it is another village very close by. But this is the best preserved set of traditional wineries of the entire Ribera del Duero route, which is why in 2017 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.) with the category of “Ethnological Ensemble“.
Salted sheep’s meat and Castilian stew help to replenish your strength after a stroll through this great little riverside village along the Golbán stream.
In the third week of August, the Atauta fiestas are held in honour of the Santo Cristo del Amor (Holy Christ of Love), whose image was walled up during the Civil War so that it would not be damaged.
Atauta’s local name: Atautecos.
