Avellaneda Palace
Peñaranda de Duero
About
In the first third of the 16th century (undoubtedly Peñaranda de Duero’s architectural golden age), Don Francisco de Zúñiga y Avellaneda ordered the construction of this magnificent Renaissance palace , where expert craftsmen left some of the best carved ceilings in Castile, as well as magnificent Mudejar and Plateresque plasterwork.
The different rooms are distributed around the central porticoed courtyard. A grand staircase with three flights of stairs leads to the main floor, where we find beautifully decorated rooms such as the Ambassadors’ Hall, presided over by a stucco fireplace, above which is a tribune enclosed by a lattice.
Located in the Plaza Mayor of Peñaranda de Duero, the Palace of Avellaneda (also known as the Palace of the Counts of Miranda or the Palace of the Zúñiga) has a large Plateresque façade on which we can see the coats of arms of the Counts of Miranda sculpted by the great master Felipe Vigarny.
The Avellaneda Palace was declared a MONUMENT in 1923. In 1940 it passed into the hands of the State, and is currently the property of the Junta de Castilla y León.
