Berlangas de Roa
Berlangas de Roa
About
A town in the Ribera del Duero region of Burgos located halfway between Aranda and Roa, between the fertile plains of the Duero and those of the Riaza.
Its name reveals the origin of its first settlers: Santa María de Valeria de Berlangas. An important milestone in the historical evolution of Berlangas took place in the 18th century with the promotion of its agriculture, with the creation of a beautiful olive grove and mills for the production of the fruit. The past of Berlangas has also left artistic remains worthy of a visit, such as the parish church of San Andrés (17th century) or the hermitage of the Virgen de los Huertos (12th century and Romanesque style).
You can also visit the monument to the meteorite named “Berlanguillas” in honour of the area of impact. This is the only meteorite recorded to have fallen in the province of Burgos to date. The event took place on 8 July 1811 at 8 p.m., when the sky was clear on the road from Aranda de Duero to Roa, when a detonation similar to that of a cannon shot was heard, followed by others for about a minute. The war situation that the country was experiencing at the time under the occupation of Napoleon’s troops led the neighbouring villages to think that there had been an explosion of a powder magazine of gigantic proportions. However, the supposed explosion left one piece of evidence: a crater from which several stones were extracted and sent to Paris for study (remember that at that time, scientists only admitted the existence of the Sun and the planets of the Solar System). Fragments of the Berlangas meteorite are currently preserved in different museums and scientific institutions, but none of them are in Spain.
In this municipality, the river Riaza flows into the Duero, as well as into the Gromejón. The village of Berlangas is also characterised by its large number of natural springs and fountains, due to the abundance of water in the municipality, such as the “Fuente del Riaza” (next to the old railway bridge, now out of service), the “Fuentes de los Caños”, “Fuente las Palomas”, etc… All this favours hiking activities with routes such as the Sendero del Agua that reaches the neighbouring village of Hoyales de Roa, crossing the “Los Arañales Wetland”, which allows bird watching.
The main festivities in Berlangas are held in honour of the Virgen de los Huertos (23 April) and its patron saint, San Andrés Apóstol (30 November).
