Fompedraza
About
In 1988, the Benito Hernando brothers (Gaspar, Javier and Fernando), born in Fompedraza and linked to this land, decided to transform the farm they owned by analysing the best resources of the land.
The soil and climate were ideal for growing vines, so the best land was selected and vineyards were planted in Curiel, Peñafiel and Fompedraza, so that today there are a total of 85 hectares.
The type of soil is varied: in Curiel (at 700 metres) the vineyard is of sandy soil with siliceous stone, in Peñafiel (at 750 metres) of sand and clay and in Fompedraza (at an altitude of 910 metres) of black soil with limestone and sandy loam. These differences in soil and altitude create harmony, giving personality to the grapes.
In 1992, they produced their first wine, 20,000 bottles of a young wine with 6 months in oak barrels. Their determination to make great wines grew over the years, as did the structure of the winery, expanding and incorporating technique and technology to tradition, being very clear that a wine cannot be improvised, that to make a great wine you have to pamper nature and combine its fruit with your work. At present, 600,000 bottles are produced of a wine which, as we have said before, is characterised by its harmony, personality and structure.
Since the 1994 vintage, Bodegas Briego has received great recognition for this work. Five consecutive vintages, they managed to be the best Reserva of Ribera del Duero in the Envero Awards. The 1995 Reserva was the best wine in Spain at the Paradores Awards. Fiel 1998 was the eighth best wine in the world at Madrid Fusión and Fiel 2004 was also third. In other international competitions, numerous gold and silver medals have been obtained along with excellent reviews in the specialised press, such as the 91 points awarded by the renowned critic Robert Parker to Briego Tiempo Crianza 2009.
