About

Located 25 kilometres from Aranda de Duero, the history of this town is linked to that of its most illustrious neighbour: Santo Domingo de Guzmán.

In the 13th century, King Alfonso X decided to build a manor in honour of the founder of the Order of the Dominicans, creating what is still today the artistic and historical complex around which the rest of the buildings revolve.

In addition to the Dominican sites such as the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán and the Torreón de los Guzman, in Caleruega you can enjoy archaeological sites, hiking routes through nature, the oldest traditional underground wine cellar in the Designation of Origin and a rich gastronomy.

Other outstanding places to visit in Caleruega are:

  • Church of the Dominican Mothers.
  • Parish Church of San Sebastián.
  • Monumento al labrador (Monument to the farmer): a garden area that pays homage to all agricultural workers, the vast majority of the town’s inhabitants.
  • Lagar de Valdepinos Museum: an old wine press where wine was made, restored as a museum so as not to forget tradition.

In terms of nature:

  • In the surroundings of Caleruega we can find the Las “Loberas Natural Site” a fantastic environment to enjoy: the Nature Interpretation Centre “Las Loberas”, circular spaces inside the corrals that shepherds used to spend the night and protect themselves from wolf attacks. Today it has been converted into a museum and a lookout tower has been installed to observe the surrounding flora and fauna. It is part of the so-called Sendero de las Loberas, a 10 km circular path, where you can sit at the foot of the emblematic Holm Oak, one of the unique trees of our Route.
  • If we are talking about birding, the creation of the dunghill, the “Caleruega wetland” and the observatory on the banks of the river Bañuelos allows this hobby to be practised, although the main species that inhabit Caleruega are the steppe birds, which settle here and form stable populations.

Back in the town centre of Caleruega, the Peña San Jorge dominates the whole town and offers a panoramic view of the region.

For all these reasons, since 2017 Caleruega has also been a member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain.

San Sebastián is the star of Caleruega’s fiestas in January, but there are also many others, such as the Candelas, the Marzas, the Mayas, Easter and the Machorra. In August, Santo Domingo de Guzmán and Santa Juana de Aza are the stars of the local festivities. Special mention should be made of the pilgrimage of the Virgen de Castro, which has been declared of “Regional Tourist Interest” by the Junta de Castilla y León.

Caleruega has a seasonal TOURISM OFFICE.

Caleruega’s local name: caleroganos.
