In the area of La Quiñonera, next to the bird observatory and the bird bed, there is a wetland that occupies an area of approximately 2,200 m2, ideal for birdwatching (birding).

The creation of this middens was carried out by digging an excavation next to the river Bañuelos, with an adjoining hollow that serves as a spillway, on former agricultural land. It is a pond fed by water from a nearby spring known as the “El Sapo” spring, which in turn has been recovered in order to facilitate the presence of amphibians. The material from the previous clearing has been spread along the outer slopes of the pond, in order to regenerate the vegetation on the embankments. The spillways and water inlets have been reinforced by placing rockfill stone in the channels to prevent erosion at the water inlets and outlets in the ponds. The result achieved is the creation of a new habitat that has increased the richness and diversity of plant and animal species (birds and herps) in the area, and also serves as an educational resource linked to the bird observatory in the pigeon loft and the birdbath.

Since 2018, the City Council has been working with a professional nature guide who organises guided tours for individuals and groups. In addition, as a result of the collaboration with the Natural Heritage Foundation, the dovecote-home is equipped with interpretive panels.

The observation hut is located next to the wetland, as well as a dunghill (carcass deposit area for carrion-eating birds), which provides the Caleruega area with a fantastic area for bird watching and learning about birds. They are located on the long route of the so-called “Sendero de las Loberas”.

This project won the “Fuentes Claras” award for sustainability in small municipalities in Castilla y León in 2018.
