Canalejas De Peñafiel
Canalejas de Peñafiel
About
Located on the banks of the river Duero, and situated practically on the top of the moor, looking out over the Duratón, its municipal district borders the province of Segovia.
The church of the Virgen de la Asunción, patron saint of the town, dates from the 12th century. Romanesque-Gothic in style and built in stone with a slender tower, its naves are covered by groin vaults and plasterwork from the 18th century. Inside, the main altarpiece, a Baroque work from the 17th century, is a marvellous sight to behold.
But more than the church, what will surprise us is the Ermita de la Virgen del Olmar. Located in a marvellous place, on a hillside hidden among abundant vegetation, it is a stone building with a belfry. To get there, take the path that goes straight ahead next to the cemetery.
In addition to these two religious temples, this Valladolid town has an excellent natural viewpoint over the Duratón valley and a district of wine cellars in the lower part of the village, from where you can enjoy the altitude of these riverside moors.
Walking through Canalejas, and observing the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Olmar, you will find the “Cueva Eremitorio del Olmar”.
Canalejas de Peñafiel celebrates its first festival during Corpus Christi, with religious events and open-air dances. Also of a religious nature is the pilgrimage with the Virgin from the church to the hermitage, on the first weekend in July, on the occasion of the festivity of the Virgen del Olmar. The last celebration of the year is in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
The local name for Canalejas de Peñafiel is: castaños.
