Casanova
About
Casanova is a neighbourhood in the municipality of Peñaranda de Duero (barely 3 kilometres separate these two riverside towns).
Historical events include the revolt of the Casanovans against the presence of Napoleon’s troops (War of Independence, 19th century), and the execution of Miguel Delgado, a war hero who was part of the local resistance and was hanged from the keep. After several days, the inhabitants of Casanova asked the Duke for mercy so that they could bury him and so they were able to do so in the ex-collegiate church of Santa Ana (Peñaranda de Duero). As a result of this event, a street near the main square of Peñaranda was given the name of “la calleja de la piedad” (the street of mercy).
Casanova has a church dedicated to the Virgen del Pino and the hermitage of San Roque, which dates from 1713 (making it one of the oldest hermitages in the area).
As an environmental heritage site, Casanova is known as a haven of life for its birds and steppe habitats such as the alaudids, which blend in with the terrain thanks to their colours.
Casanova’s patron saint festivities are in honour of the Assumption of Our Lady (15 August) and in honour of San Roque (16 August).
The local name for Casanova: casanoveros.
