Castle ‘El Cubo’ or Tower of Langa de Duero
Langa de Duero
About
This tower is the only remaining vestige of a medieval castle from the 14th century, a castle that came to have a complex system of underground galleries (now closed) and which served as stables, accommodation for troops and even granaries. But its true origin dates back to the 9th century, with the construction of a Christian tower on an old Muslim watchtower strategically erected to watch over the border line marked by the Duero.
In 1506, the Catholic Monarchs themselves stayed in the castle on their way through Langa. Years later, Enrique Enríquez, the bastard brother of Leonor of Castile (daughter of Ferdinand III the Saint and Queen of England), was imprisoned in its tower, managing to escape thanks to a rope provided by the villagers themselves. Centuries before, the Cid held the tower’s tenancy after suffering his first exile.
This “tower of homage”, also called“el Cubo” by the locals, was declared a “monument” in 1949. It is 20 metres high, 12 metres on each side and has walls up to 2 metres thick. Currently renovated and open to visitors, it has three floors, plus a basement and a roof terrace with battlements and loopholes (openings for shooting arrows) in very good condition:
- Basement: exhibition of old photos of Langa.
- First floor: a journey through history from the Bronze Age to the present day.
- First floor: systems of attack and defence between Moors and Christians, existing fortifications, battles of Gormaz and Piedra Sillada and Almanzor’s passage through these lands.
- Third floor: Enrique Enrique Enriquez de la Torre’s escape and the passage of the Cid Campeador through Langa.
Today converted into the Interpretation Centre of the Route of the Watchtowers of the province of Soria (which also includes that of Quintanilla de Tres Barrios), its views are magnificent (it has four viewpoints), overlooking the Renaissance bridge of Langa, the fertile lowlands of the Duero and the distant Sierra de Ayllón.
