Castle of San Esteban de Gormaz
San Esteban de Gormaz
About
In 1949 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
The town of San Esteban de Gormaz , with an important Roman past, preserves, embedded in the walls, abundant remains of Roman, funerary and religious epigraphy, and medieval vestiges of churches and fortifications. Repopulated by the Count of Castile, Gonzalo Fernández, in 912, it was one of the so-called “Gates of Castile”, and during the 10th century it was the site of numerous battles due to its unique strategic importance in the defensive line of the Duero, emerging as a fortified town, with a nucleus consisting of a castle located on the top of a hill, dominating the civil village, which huddles within its own fortifications. San Esteban is therefore configured as a “burgh” that takes an organic growth model, adapted to the topography of the territory: main streets inside the walled enclosure, arranged longitudinally on the slope of the hill, and transversal roads with a steep slope.
The castle can be reached from the village along a path that starts at the church of San Miguel and leads directly to the enclosure from the northwest. It was once fenced off to prevent the presence of people inside, so there are still remains of the bars to which the fence was attached. It has visual control with other sites in the area of varying chronology such as Castro Moros, Peña Magdalena, Valdisen, etc.
The Castle of San Esteban de Gormaz is part of the so-called “Route of the Castles of the Ribera del Duero“, a journey through the culture and history of our region.
