Castrillo de la Vega
About
In the heart of the Ribera del Duero, 31 kilometres from Peñafiel, just 10 kilometres from its judicial district (Aranda de Duero) and a few kilometres from the capital of Burgos, lies the municipality of Castrillo de la Vega. Surrounded by countless fields of vineyards and cereals, for hundreds of years it has preserved the flavour and customs typical of Castilian villages.
Castrillo de la Vega is a village with more than a thousand years of history, whose origins date back to the Reconquest.
In its church of Santiago Apóstol, a faithful narrator of the passing of the years, you can contemplate some of the most beautiful pieces of traditional Castilian religious imagery.
Castrillo de la Vega also has its own hermitage, that of the Virgen de la Vega, and an attractive district of wineries.
The remains of a Renaissance castle are visible (north wall and a cube) which is now in ruins. Called “Torre del Monte or Torre de Montejo”, its strategic position gives it a wide visual dominion over the Duero valley. It is the remains of a fortification with a square floor plan of about 15 metres on each side, flanked by circular cubes at the corners, of which only the one located to the northwest is preserved. The southern flank is protected by two parallel moat lines. These remains date from the end of the 15th century and are currently protected as an “Asset of Cultural Interest”.
On the outskirts of the village, over the Duero, the remains of an ancient medieval bridge (Roque Bridge) are evidence of a time of great prosperity and prosperity, as Castrillo was an important centre on the route that linked the Castilian plateau with the ports of Bilbao and Santander.
The riverside nature also has a lot to say in this town: visit the Sotos y Ribera del Duero nature reserve. The Senda del Duero passes through Castrillo de Duero on its way to Roa, and the Sendero de la Villa.
Without forgetting its past, Castrillo de la Vega is a dynamic and modern town that looks ahead and moves steadily towards the future.
Castrillo celebrates its fiestas around 25th July in honour of St. James the Apostle and its patron saint fiestas on the first weekend after Easter in honour of the Virgen de la Vega. In August, the Virgin and San Roque are celebrated.
