Church of La Magdalena
Alcubilla de Avellaneda
About
The Renaissance parish church of La Magdalena and the hermitage of Santo Cristo del Campillo, from the same period, are the two examples of religious architecture in the town.
The main temple originally had a Latin cross floor plan, and was reformed to house other altars up to four in number: San Sebastián, Santo Cristo, La Virgen and San Antonio de Padua are the main altarpieces of these Baroque altarpieces. The chevet of the temple is made up of a three-piece altarpiece in polychrome wood presided over by the patron saint, Saint Mary Magdalene. The baptismal register has been kept here since 1530 and the marriage and death register since 1641.
Two Bronze Age swords and Roman rural settlements were found in Alcoba la Yerma and La Serna. Four Latin inscriptions are preserved in the hermitage of Santo Cristo del Campillo, highly venerated by the population, and another in a house with Visigothic architectural remains. Four stelae from the medieval period are decorated with Greek crosses, swastikas and seven-pointed stars.
