Church of Santa Águeda
Sotillo de la Ribera
About
This beautiful temple, of good quality and solidity, concentrates the maximum artistic richness in its façade. The Church of Santa Águeda de Sotillo de la Ribera was begun in the 17th century and finished in the 18th century. It has a notable wealth of retablistic richness, with exuberant Baroque examples and good Neoclassical examples such as the main altarpiece, as well as a splendid organ from the second half of the 17th century and a unique stone Stations of the Cross carved by the local sculptor Amancio Calvo.
- The exterior features a magnificent Baroque tower and the main façade, with three sections.
- Inside, divided into three naves, the Chapel of San Miguel, the aforementioned Baroque organ, the High Altarpiece and the Chapel of the Rosary stand out .
We must not forget that the 18th century was a period of relative peace and prosperity, which meant good sales of wine from this area. Part of this income was used to pay for the works.
As an anecdote it is worth mentioning that in 2017, during the restoration of an 18th century Christ (popularly known as “Cristo del Miserere”) a“time capsule” was found. It is a document from 1777 signed by the chaplain of the cathedral of Burgo de Osma, Joaquín Mínguez, which identifies the sculptor who created the carving, but also takes the opportunity to communicate with the future by providing details about the time they were in: economic, religious, political and cultural information of the time.
