Church of Santa Clara
Peñafiel
About
This building with a central octagonal floor plan was built in 1698 and is now an Asset of Cultural Interest. It is the church of what is now the Hotel Spa Convento Las Claras, although it maintains its liturgical function.
The convent was founded in 1607 by the second wife of D. Pedro Téllez Girón, Doña Isabel de la Cueva. The church, built in the last decade of the 17th century, has a central octagonal floor plan with an elliptical dome, covered with attractive plasterwork from the beginning of the 18th century. A semicircular triumphal arch gives access to the main chapel, of small dimensions, covered with lunette decoration. The choir loft is located at the foot of the church. Inside, numerous altarpieces decorate the main altar and the perimeter walls.
On the outside, the façade stands out, with two sections, the lower one with a semicircular arch flanked by recessed pilasters and the upper one of reduced dimensions with a niche, finished off with a pediment. Above the walls of the Convent, there is a notable doorway with a round arch, covered by a tiled roof, flanked by the coats of arms of the founders.
