Church of Santa María la Menor
Village of San Esteban
About
Gothic church dedicated to Santa María la Menor, alluding to its origins as an annexed parish of Peñalba de San Esteban, Santa María la Mayor. However, the patron saint of the parish is Santa Isabel due to the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Santa Isabel, a fact that appears on the altarpiece.
It conserves several elements from the old Romanesque temple, such as the walls and doorway. The latter has a semicircular arch with a rounded arch, supported on beautiful imposts and pilasters.
Inside, other Romanesque elements stand out, such as the aguabenditera font (square base, octagonal shaft and grooved at the top) and the baptismal font with a semi-spherical grooved vase on the outside and a venera shape on the inside.
In addition to the altarpiece, the Mudejar-style inverted boat-shaped ceiling is also noteworthy. Two bells crown this church which, in former times, in addition to being a place of worship, was also a cultural space (dances, theatre and music).
