Church of St. Nicholas of Bari
Sinovas
About
The parish church of San Nicolás de Bari was declared an“Asset of Cultural Interest” in the Monument category in 1964.
- The origins of the church of San Nicolás de Bari de Sinovas date back to the 13th century. The Romanesque doorway and some walls remain from this period, including the original bell tower, which was covered in the 14th century when the fortified tower attached to the foot of the former church was built.
- In the 15th century, the original walls were raised and the coffered ceiling, painted in tempera, in the Mudejar style of Burgos, was built. Some 160 of the more than 400 figures that it originally had are still preserved. Among them we can find religious scenes, knights, members of the clergy, saints, maidens, monsters and real and imaginary animals?
- Around 1520 the brothers Juan and Sebastián de la Torre built the choir staircase and the Mudejar plasterwork pulpit, and in the mid-16th century the Romanesque apse was demolished to build the current Renaissance apse, together with the altarpiece of San Nicolás de Bari, the work of Francisco de Logroño (a disciple of Juan de Juni), and the atrium with its Renaissance columns.
- Nowadays we can also enjoy inside some pieces belonging to the Museum of Sacred Art of Aranda de Duero, dated between the 15th and 18th centuries.
