In 1324, in the former fortress of Alfonso X the Wise, the Infante Don Juan Manuel built the current Gothic-Mudejar convent where he was buried. This emblematic Peñafiel monument was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1931 and can now be visited freely or with a guide.

The exterior of this Site of Cultural Interest stands out for the exuberance of the arches made of brick, in the Gothic-Mudejar style, which contrast radically with the rich decoration of the funeral chapel of the Manuels, built two centuries later in the Plateresque style.

The chapel’s central motif is a window with Gothic tracery framed by two pilasters and an arch. Two coats of arms of the chapel’s tutelary family flank the window, one of them on a semi-circular tower, which corresponds to a spiral staircase without a central support. This staircase provides access to a terrace.

The funeral chapel of Don Juan Manuel de Villena, in the Plateresque style with Gothic reminiscences, is an outstanding piece of the Spanish Renaissance. Built in very white limestone, meticulously carved and conserved in very good condition, it is one of Peñafiel’s attractions for lovers of cultural tourism.
