About

This riverside municipality belongs to the region of the Cuco Valley. It has its origins in a Bronze Age settlement, although its historical relevance dates back to the 14th century, as can be seen in the following places of interest in this Valladolid village, formerly known as “Curiel de los Ajos”:

  • Castle-Fortress of Doña Berenguela, also called “Castillo de Arriba”. It is situated on the top of a rocky outcrop, being the highest inhabited point and the oldest castle in the province of Valladolid. Nowadays this castle is a hotel-restaurant.
  • Palace of the Zuñiga family from the 15th century, of which only the wall and the keep remain. Also known as “Castillo de Abajo”, it has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1949.
  • Church of Santa María, built in the 12th century in Gothic-Mudejar style, its interior conserves two large Mudejar arcades, a beautiful polychrome Mudejar coffered ceiling, as well as a main altarpiece from the 16th century. It has a ribbed vault and a beautiful porticoed façade.
  • Church of San Martín, from the 12th century and Romanesque construction, today private property.
  • 16th centuryJurisdictional Rollo, located at the entrance to the village. It is one of the six surviving rolls in the province of Valladolid and has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1963. On its upper part we find the coats of arms of the Estúñiga or Zúñiga families.
  • Puerta de la Magdalena gate, the only surviving part of the old 12th century wall.
  • Ermita del Cristo hermitage, which welcomes visitors at the entrance to the village.
  • Museums: Ethnographic and Old Schools.
  • Alto Las Pinzas, formed by two peaks: Cujón and Las Pinzas, is an excellent viewpoint over the valley. There is an eremitic settlement of caves and passages already inhabited in the Bronze Age, in which an altar carved into the rock stands out. It can be reached by following the Sendero de las Pinzas.

History, culture and heritage, which are also reflected in the fact that it belongs to the Valladolid routes of the castles and of Infante Don Juan Manuel. But Curiel is also nature: very close to this riverside municipality runs the great Duero and therefore, stage 11 of the GR-14 that goes from Roa de Duero to Peñafiel.

Curiel de Duero celebrates its fiestas (in which the “Mudanzas de Curiel” will surely be danced) twice over:

  • La Cruz de Mayo (first weekend in May).
  • San Isidro (15th May).
  • They also celebrate the “Fiesta del Verano” (first weekend in August) and the “Fiesta de la Vendimia” (October).
