Fompedraza
Fompedraza
About
Formerly known as “Fuente Pedraza” and of etymological origin“stone fountain“, this town in Valladolid is nowadays a charming riverside village.
Curious, to say the least, is the position, shape and landscape that Fompedraza shows to anyone who decides to pass through here. To begin with, it is neither in a valley nor on moorland, since its upper limit is the plain of the moorland and the lower limit is the beginning of the valley. The curiosities continue when you see that the shape of the group of houses, if you look at them from the moorland side, is similar to a “V”. Then, because of the layout of the road, the village is completely divided in two, and if you want to go to the other side, you have to cross it.
On the right-hand side of Fompedraza, as one ascends, is the Church of San Bartolomé, which is somewhat separated from the urban area and can be reached by a path. Built in stone during the 13th and 14th centuries in the Gothic style, it is a temple with three naves where the central nave is covered with a groined vault and 18th century plasterwork and the side naves with groin and barrel vaulting. Meanwhile, the transept arms and the main chapel are covered with ribbed vaulting.
The festivities of Fompedraza are hosted by San Bartolomé and are held in August. The festival of Las Candelas (February) is also celebrated.
The gastronomy of this riverside village is known for its meat, especially lamb, and for its wines.
The inhabitants of Fompedraza are called patajos.
