About
In the heart of the Corcos region, in the Ribera del Duero region of Burgos, lies this municipality whose history is linked to that of the “Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Aza”, back in the 12th century. In 1833, Fuentelisendo became part of the province of Burgos, dissolving that Community (Aza), a great leap in time (including the purchase of this village in 1504 by Queen Isabella I of Castile for the modest price of 40 million maravedís).
Fuentelisendo owes its name to its fountain, with two semicircular stone arches. It comes from “Fuente Lisendro”, which in turn comes from “Font Alesandro”. As a toponymic curiosity, it is one of the longest Spanish municipalities in terms of letters (13), being a single word.
What to see in Fuentelisendo:
- San Pedro ad Vincula Parish Church, built in the Baroque period and consisting of three naves, with a square chancel and a tower at the foot.
- Hermitage of the Holy Cross, built after the Bishop threatened to excommunicate it. It was dedicated to the Holy Cross and the feast of the Holy Cross was established as the town’s feast day (14th September). One day later (15th September) the Virgen de los Dolores is celebrated.
