About

“Villa por sí y sobre sí” was the definition given by Carlos III in 1767 to this town, which was not repopulated until the second half of the 10th century, as it is located on the left bank of the Duero River, in the Riaza basin. Its territory was hidden under the sea millions of years ago, as attested by the marine fossils found in an area called “La Peña”, a nesting place for vultures.

Located in the south of Burgos and in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, its name is a clear expression of the combination of Fuente and Enebro, a term that alludes to the abundance of both elements in its terrain.

Amongst its heritage, the following should be highlighted:

  • Castillo de la Peña: In the past it belonged to the Count of Siruela. It is located to the south of the town, at the top of the peak that the peasants call “Peñaflor”, surrounded by a very rugged terrain, completely dominating the gorge opened by the stream. Today it is in a ruinous state (protected as an “Asset of Cultural Interest” since 1949), but it houses a kind of viewpoint from which practically the whole of the moorland to the south of the Riaza can be seen.
  • Church of San Lorenzo: with a Renaissance façade, rectangular tower, plain apse and Classicist façade. The unfinished interior is Baroque with three naves and transept, with square columns, arches, dome and moulded stucco vaults. The baptismal font is Renaissance. The main altarpiece is neoclassical with San Lorenzo, the patron saint of the church.
  • Hermitage of the Virgen del Carmen, with Baroque altarpiece, Virgin and San Roque.
  • La Cruz de Canto.

But Fuentenebro is not all about heritage: its natural resources include the Sendero de Aguacae, which runs for 14 km around the town’s points of interest and passes through a royal cattle track that used to link the province of Burgos with Extremadura.

Fuentenebro celebrates its patron saint’s fiestas in honour of San Lorenzo Mártir (August) and also celebrates the Virgen del Carmen (July).

The local name for Fuentenebro: fuentenebrinos.
