Fuentespina
About
Fuentespina is a municipality in Burgos located in the south of the Ribera del Duero, at an altitude of 834 metres above sea level on the Duero plain since the third quarter of the 18th century.
Its good communications and location allowed the establishment in the town of the royal road that connected the Kingdom of France and Madrid, as well as the great Cañada through which cattle from the Sierra de Burgos to Badajoz travelled. These advantages made it possible to exploit the situation, leading to an increase in the population. After a period of confrontations with the Council of Aranda de Duero, in 1636, Philip IV accepted the jurisdiction of Aranda and the town was granted the title of Villa Realenga. In 1642 Fuentespina was finally separated from Aranda, although it still maintained a certain degree of dependence.
At the heart of Fuentespina stands the imposing Church of San Miguel Árcangel, a large Baroque building, with a slender tower that identifies this riverside town in the distance. Strolling through its streets you will find fountains such as the Caño or the Canillo, parks for the enjoyment of the little ones, or the Humilladero, built in 1607. A little further on the outskirts you will find a beautiful spot where the Parque de la Cañada is located, a fantastic place for a stroll that ends at the hermitage of the Santísima Trinidad, with a Baroque façade crowned by its belfry, inside which you can contemplate a Churrigueresque altarpiece with the image of the aforementioned Saint.
Going up the Cuesta del Carpio, we come to the imposing district of underground cellars, with up to four levels of overlapping galleries, bringing together 128 cellars that, together, reach a length of 3.2 km.
If you like hiking, the Sendero de las Aromáticas (Aromatics Trail) PR-BU-161 runs through the upper area of Fuentespina, taking in almost all the landscapes to be found in the region.
The most popular fiestas in Fuentespina are:
- Santísima Trinidad or Padre Eterno (Sunday before Corpus Christi).
- Patron Saint’s Day: San Miguel Arcángel (29 September, but celebrated on the last weekend of that month).
Gentilicio of Fuentespina: bubillo.
