Fuentespina Underground Wineries
Fuentespina
About
The underground cellar district of Fuentespina (Burgos) is located on the Cuesta del Carpio. It is a group of large wineries and wine presses, located on a hillside and adjacent to the town centre, with a high density of excavations.
The “merendero” phenomenon spread rapidly through the Fuentespina cellars, distorting their traditional aesthetics and, in several cases, compromising their structural stability.
In 2015 , this neighbourhood of cellars was catalogued by the Fuentespina Town Council through the architect Alfredo Sanz Sanza and inventoried:
- 128 cataloguedcellars which, together, reach a length of 3.2 km. They are built on four superimposed levels. The average length of each cellar is 25 metres and 49% of them are classified as “good” in terms of their state of conservation.
- There are 75 wine presses, 10 of which are underground. The average capacity of the lagar in Fuentespina was 210 hl, and the total capacity was 16,000 hl.
- There are a total of 115 “cerceras” ( that is the name given in Fuentespina to the “zarceras” or vents in the cellars). There are several of them that connect up to three different cellars, authentic works of engineering.
The map in the attached image shows the precision with which this study has been carried out, detailing the location, accessibility and height of each of these cellars, which are grouped into four areas: El Carpio, Carra Fresnillo, Carra Aranda and Calle Alta.
VISITS to the FUENTESPINA UNDERGROUND WINERIES:
