About

The current village of Guma was born from a repopulation carried out in the 50s of the 20th century, as a consequence of Franco’s policy of building dams and reservoirs, a policy which meant that many villages had to be flooded. To provide shelter for its inhabitants, the National Institute of Colonisation acquired the La Vid and Guma estates, first building the village of La Vid and later the village of Guma with 42 houses that were given to settlers from different villages in Guadalajara, Cuenca, Segovia, Valladolid, etc…

Despite the short life of Guma, it already has its own history: it had schools (one for boys and one for girls), a house for the teacher, a rectory, a bakery and a laundry. It also had a house for teaching adult women run by the “Sección Femenina”, as did the nearby village of Peñaranda de Duero in Burgos.

Guma rests on a terrace overlooking the river Duero under the gaze of the parish church of San Norberto. At its feet is the magnificent dam from the beginning of the century that gives rise to the Aranda and Guma canals, the turning point of the meander formed by the Duero at this point along the river. Guma is in good natural health, forming part of the GR-14 Path that runs along our river from its source to the Portuguese border. In the municipal district of this hamlet is also the hidden “Cueva del búho”, offering refuge to the wild cat, the marten, the genet and the eagle owl, as well as spectacular views.

Guma is part of the municipality of La Vid y Barrios, and celebrates its fiestas in honour of San Norberto (6th June).

Guma’s local name: gumenses.
