Gumiel de Izán
Gumiel de Izán
About
With a Roman past, this town in Burgos, located 12 kilometres from its judicial district, Aranda de Duero, is home to a cultural site of great beauty.
The bridges of San Pedro and San Antonio, which formed part of the Roman road from Clunia to Asturica, are preserved over the river Gromejón. There were also two monasteries: San Lorenzo and San Pedro de Gumiel. It was in the latter that the first part of the Gumiel-Aranda Council took place in the 15th century.
The town of Gumiel de Izán was declared a historic-artistic site in 2003. It is well worth strolling through its streets and enjoying the popular architecture, which may remind us of other Castilian towns in the Ribera del Duero region such as Peñafiel or San Esteban de Gormaz, and its buildings, among which the wine presses stand out.
The church of Santa María, the most important monument in Gumiel de Izán, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin of Santa María, is also worth a visit. Consisting of three naves, it occupies the north side of the Plaza Mayor and is Gothic in style.
You can also visit the following interesting places: the Mesones arch, the castle, the Santo Cristo de Reveche hermitage, the Virgen del Río hermitage, the San Roque hermitage and the San Antonio hermitage.
There is evidence in Gumiel de Izán of the remains of a wall (in the 14th century its inhabitants gave refuge to King Pedro I the Cruel within its walls), a wall of which only foundations, rubble and two gates (those of the South and North) remained in the 18th century. Subsequently, the layout of the wall was extended due to the growth of the town centre. This wall has been an “Asset of Cultural Interest” since 1949.
The town is known by the following names:
- Santo Domingo de Guzmán, who grew up here.
- Per Abat who wrote the manuscript of the “Cantar de Mío Cid”, born here.
- Diego de Gumiel editor of “Tirant lo Blanc” (1490), born here.
Walking along the Sendero de los molinos you can visit some of the mills that mark out the lands of the town of Gumiel de Izán and the banks of the river Gromejón.
Several festivities are held in Gumiel de Izán, including La Asunción and San Roque (August), the Pilgrimage of San Antonio (13 June), the Pilgrimage to Santo Cristo de Reveche (August) and the Festival of the Virgen del Río (September).
Gumiel de Izán has a seasonal TOURISM OFFICE.
