About

Gumiel de Mercado is located in an area surrounded by pine forests and was once the head of a manor. This riverside town is bathed by the river Gromejón, on whose banks there were important monasteries during the Middle Ages, such as Gumiel de Izán and Sancti Espíritu de La Aguilera.

There are several places of interest:

  • The Church of San Pedro Apóstol from the 16th century, located in a corner of the main square and declared a “monument” since 1.949.
  • The walls that surrounded the town (also declared a “monument” in 1949), of which only two gates remain: the arch of Las Pradas or Carrasotillo to the northwest and the arch of San Pedro (Carramonzón or de Gallo) to the northeast.
  • The parish church of Santa María, in Gothic style, from the 15th century.
  • The hermitage of San Juan, in Gothic style, is located outside the centre of Gumiel de Mercado and forms a pleasant wooded area with a fountain, tables and barbecues.
  • On the Castle Hill ( of which only the ruins remain) there is an important group of underground cellars (102 in total, plus wine presses and wine presses), some of which are still in use today, reused as picnic areas.

It is also worth mentioning the Finca Real Sitio de la Ventosilla, an important farm and wine-growing centre surrounded by vineyards and oak and holm oak forests which, over the years, has seen the most important figures in politics, business and the arts come and go hunting in these parts. It was during the time when it belonged to Don Francisco de Rojas y Sandoval (Duke of Lerma) that it reached its maximum splendour, receiving visits from King Felipe III and his court and Rubens himself with his brushes.

The patron saint festivities are in honour of Nuestra Señora la Virgen de la Mayor (early September). In June, festivities are held in honour of San Juan, with the corresponding bonfire and the pilgrimage to the nearby hermitage that bears his name.

Gumiel de Mercado is known by the local name: gomellanos / gumellanos.
