Honrubia de la Cuesta
Honrubia de la Cuesta
About
In the north of the province of Segovia, bordering the province of Burgos, lies this riverside municipality at an altitude of 1,001 metres. References to its name date back to the 13th century, when it was called “Fuente Rubia” due to the reddish colour of the spring water caused by the characteristic clay of the area. Later it became known as “Honrrubia” and “Fuenrubia” and in the 20th century “de la Cuesta” was added.
The battles that took place in this area made the famous guerrilla fighter Juan Martín Díez “El Empecinado”, , stand out. The legendary action of “El Salto del Caballo“, which gave rise to the innumerable raids of the guerrilla fighter in the Spanish struggle against the French Napoleonic side, began at the end of April 1808 when he intercepted, in the Segovian village of Honrubia de la Cuesta, a French courier made up of four soldiers.
Highlights in Honrubia de la Cuesta:
- The parish church of San Cristóbal at the top of the village, built according to the canons of Baroque architecture of the second half of the 17th century.
- The Virgen del Lirio hermitage, two kilometres from the town.
The devotion of the villagers to the patron saint of the village, the Virgen del Lirio, is outstanding. It is said that she appeared to some shepherds next to a well, where her shrine was built in the form of a hermitage. It is also said that she had two sisters: the Virgen de las Viñas (from Aranda de Duero) and the Virgen de Hontanares (from Riaza).
The festivities in honour of the Virgen del Lirio are held on the first weekend in July and the first weekend in September.
