About

The village of Hontangas, surrounded by a natural garden of meadows (watered by the rivers Riaza and Hontanguillas) has a long history. Its name is a derivative of Fontangas: the village of fountains, which indeed abound in it.

This municipality boasts a beautiful hermitage carved out of the rock from a prehistoric cave which was adorned with a Renaissance doorway, topped with a magnificent belfry. The history of the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cueva is quite peculiar: it is said that the lords of Haza saw a light coming out of the cave from their castle and that, on approaching to see what it was, they found the carving of the Virgin, which they wanted to take to Haza in an ox cart, but no matter how hard they tried, they could not move the cart. Another version tells that some farmers from the neighbouring village of Adrada de Haza discovered the Virgin in a cave near their village. They tried to take her to their village to create a shrine for her in their village. But, according to legend, when they put her on a cart to take her away, the mules did not want to walk and, try as they might, they could not move the statue from the place where it was. So they decided to create the hermitage of the Virgen de la Cueva right there. The people who went there to admire the Virgin formed the village of Hontangas.

Hontangas celebrates its festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Cueva in April (Friday after Easter) and also on the second Saturday in September.

Other places of interest: the parish church of San Juan Bautista, predominantly Renaissance in style, the bridge over the river Riaza, the electricity factory (currently inactive) and the mills.

It is also worth a long walk or bike ride along the Sendero del Arroyo Hontanguillas (also called del Chorrón) which runs for approximately 14 km through Moradillo de Roa and La Sequera de Haza.

Hontangas people’s nickname: hontangueses / hontangueros.
