About

Its name is the result of the adaptation of the Latin words FONS and AUREA (Fountain of Gold), a well-deserved tribute to the generous fountain that brightens up the hamlet. Its surname, VALDEARADOS (Valley of the Ploughs), also Latin, soon became necessary due to the frequency with which, during the Reconquest and subsequent repopulation, such a beautiful name was used. The “Fuentedorada” of Hontoria de Valdearados

Just over 18 kilometres from Aranda de Duero, Hontoria de Valdearados concentrates a wide range of points of interest such as:

  • The Church of San Esteban Protomártir: different styles can be observed, corresponding to the different periods of its construction. With a basilica floor plan, it has three naves.
  • The hermitages of San Roque, San Antonio de Padua and Nuestra Señora la Virgen de la Serna.
  • The Canto Bridge, built in stone with two spans and imitating Roman constructions, is an emblematic work, still in service, which allows the crossing of the river Aranzuelo.
  • La Casa de la Villa or El Palacio del Obispo, now the Town Hall, which has its own name: Bishop Don Andrés de la Cuesta.
  • The Ethnographic Museum, with more than 500 utensils dedicated, in a first room, to the Church, to the household goods that were in the bedroom of the house, to the kitchen, to the laundry, to different types of lamps and lanterns and to the clay pots, containers, baskets and other measures of capacity. In a second part of the museum, the protagonists are the different trades developed by the ancestors, related to agriculture and livestock. Then resin and weaving and, finally, other trades.
  • The Schools building, made of ashlar stone.
  • The fountain in the Plaza Mayor.

The famous guerrilla fighter “El Cura Merino” was a protagonist in the battles and skirmishes during the years of the French Invasion.

A good walk along the Sendero del Belosillo finishes off a visit to this village that celebrates a wide range of festivals such as: La Virgen and San Roque (August) with the “El Ramonajo” chocolate party as a climax, the Virgen de la Serna (September), San Antonio (13 June) and San Sebastián (20 January). These are joined by the Marzas and the Luminarias.
