About

The Roman road from Uxama to Tiermes used to pass through the town. In fact, the elongated shape of Ines is due to the construction of its houses along the road. Perhaps this was the origin of the so-called “Ruta de la Lana“, a trade route that transported wool from La Alcarria and cloth from Cuenca, honey and cereal to Medina del Campo and Burgos, and which today crosses the town until it reaches Mecerreyes (Burgos), being one of the points of passage for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

The wine cellars are the most characteristic element of Ines, constructions that are still used today to keep the wine fresh and as a meeting and celebration place for the locals. There are two areas where these cellars are excavated: Peñacín and Valdemuñoz, where we can find a large number of them. Not in vain, since 1982, Ines has belonged to the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin.

In Ines is the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, built of ashlars and stone. Romanesque in style, it was burnt down by lightning in 1975 with the furniture and banners that were inside. After mass on the days of the fiestas, pujas (auctions) are held, and on the 15th of May (San Isidro) the mayor hands out sweets simulating the sowing.

Traditionally, the patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción and San Roque are held in Ines on 15 and 16 August. In addition, after the harvest, the whole village goes in procession to the Ermita de la Virgen de la Blanca, a religious building where the procession ends on Thanksgiving Day (the first weekend after 15 August).

The remains of a palace owned by the Dukes of Frías, of which part of a wall and a tower are still preserved, can be seen from the stately past of the Villa de Ines.

You can also visit the School Museum, located on the first floor of the Town Hall, and promoted by a group of women from the village.

And, by the way, INES is pronounced with the accent on the “i” and therefore does not have an accent.

Gentilicio de Ines: inesinos.
