La Vid
La Vid
About
The peculiarity of the village of La Vid, compared to other riverside villages with a long history behind them, is that it was built in the 1950s to house the residents of the old village of Linares del Arroyo (Segovia), which was flooded in order to build the Linares reservoir. The National Colonization Institute was in charge of building it and gave it the name of Colonia de Linares de La Vid in memory of the submerged Segovian village, although today it is more commonly known as La Vid (a secas).
At the easternmost entrance to the village, crossing the Duero to its left bank, the magnificent stone bridge welcomes the visitor. After crossing its 136 metres in length, the incomparable Monastery of Santa María de la Vid, whose origins date back to the 12th century, awaits us. It currently houses a Community of Augustinians, a library, a guest house and a museum and is one of the five monasteries that we enjoy in the Ribera del Duero. It should not be missed to be visited in detail, without forgetting to enjoy a walk in its surroundings, listening to the quietness and calmness of the great Duero. Just in these surroundings, on the way to the wine cellars, we will see the “rollo de justicia” ( an Asset of Cultural Interest), but we will also find one of the stages of the GR-14 path after passing through Zuzones. The Virgen del Monte Valley Trail passes through this small municipality.
In the area of “La Isla”, next to the Monastery, we can see a pair of centenary holm oaks, the Encinas Centenarias del Monasterio de La Vid, which form part of the unique trees of the Ribera del Duero.
Away from La Vid we find the peculiar Chapel of the Virgen del Monte, peculiar for being embedded in a cave. The locals of La Vid go up to this valley every year on pilgrimages. The hermitage also gives its name to the path that starts at the Monastery of La Vid and runs along the Duero river bed, its dam, and the phenomenon of the“Chimeneas de las Hadas“, to the moorlands where vineyards and agricultural crops dominate the terrain, returning again to La Vid.
In addition to Linares de la Vid, this municipality is home to two local entities: Guma and Zuzones.
La Vid celebrates its fiestas in honour of San Agustín at the end of August.
Locality of La Vid: Vitenses.
