About

Three round arches of generous width have welcomed the town of Roa for many years, until the construction of the new bridge, doubling the entrance to Roa from the left bank of the river. Situated at the foot of the fortified hill of Roa, the MAJOR bridge of Roa begins its route with a bend, ending on the south bank, between the humilladero of San Roque and the old Red Cross post, which was once a box for the collection of the pontazgo tax. The collection of this tax, as well as the exclusive contribution of the neighbours, allowed it to be repaired from the middle of the 15th century until the 19th century.

There is no evidence that the current bridge replaced a possible Roman bridge over the Duero, but there is evidence of the modifications it has undergone, reaching seven arches. After flooding and consequent deterioration of the bridge, there was renewed insistence on its repair after the crisis of the War of the Spanish Succession, despite the opposition of the town of Aranda, which considered the work to be superfluous. But little had to be done until General Zariategui partially destroyed it, and it was provisionally repaired, reducing the number of arches to four, a fact that is now in question (there are currently three arches).

Today the PUENTE MAYOR de Roa is a symbol of this town in Burgos, and shows arches and piers that were rebuilt after a major reconstruction that increased the supports in 1923.

You can see the rest of the BRIDGES here.
