Mambrilla de Castrejón
Mambrilla de Castrejón
About
Mambrilla de Castrejón sits on the banks of the river Duero between two hills called “La Mambla” and “Santa María”. In the past there was another hamlet in the same area, now uninhabited, which was called Carrascal.
It owes its origin to one of the fortresses that guarded the defensive line of the Duero. Since the Middle Ages it has always formed part of the Community of Land and Town of Roa (made up of 33 villages), of such significance in the annals of the Reconquest that it was granted a charter in 1143 by King Alfonso VIII.
The toponym of the village of Mambrilla de Castrejón, typically medieval, formerly meant “montecillo del castillejo”: “mambra” for small hill and “castrejón” or small castle in memory of the aforementioned fortress.
The traditional occupation of its inhabitants has been the usual one in the region, i.e. the cultivation of all kinds of cereals, vineyards (the local riverside wine cellars are very well known) and, lately, beetroot.
The Sendero del Balcón del Duero passes through Mambrilla de Castrejón, and the riverside views from here are well worth a stop: we recommend climbing up to the viewpoint called“El Mirador de las Peñas“.
In addition, in summer a very artistic competition is held: Drawing for Mambrilla, bringing together dozens of enthusiasts who capture the landscapes and life of this riverside village on their canvases.
