Mélida
About
In the Botijas valley, between the stream that gives it its name and the Chorrillo stream, lies Mélida, a riverside town in the district of Peñafiel, from which it is only 3 km. away.
Belonging to the district of Campo de Peñafiel, it is a small village of adobe houses covering a hill, on the top of which stands the Parish Church of San Cristóbal, a building constructed in stone in the 13th century. The 19th century fountain with the Peñafiel coat of arms bears witness to the richness of this valley in water that comes from the rainwater collected in the limestone moors that surround it. It is precisely in these moors that we find a series of caves, called “Las Bocas”, which are man-made cavities (some of them communicating horizontally and vertically) whose origin seems to be eremitic.
Mélida celebrates its fiestas in honour of Santa Isabel at the end of July.
