Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela
About
The municipality of Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela is located within the “Ribera del Duero” Designation of Origin. Belonging to the province of Segovia, it is a privileged area on the banks of the river Riaza and the slopes of the municipality, whose climate and characteristics of the terrain result in a very good quality in the harvest of its wines.
Historical outline: on the border with the province of Burgos is this village, which was reached in 1011 by Count Sancho García when it was called Montelionem, but which was not repopulated until the last quarter of the 11th century with people from the south of Burgos, from Haza and Torregalindo. In 1123 it was already mentioned as Monteio, with the addition of the compound suffix “de la Vega de la Serrezuela”, referring to the fertile plain of the river Riaza and the Serrezuela de Pradales. It became the capital of the Community of Villa y Tierra of the same name.
Even today Montejo retains its medieval appearance with its walls and ruins of the castle. In contrast, the Church of San Andrés has recently been rebuilt and houses a large collection of silverware, including a chalice made in Segovia around 1500.
The splendid ruins of the old church of San Martín Casuar (protected as an “Asset of Cultural Interest” since 1997) are worth mentioning: already depopulated in the 18th century, the external walls, the semicircular apse, the triumphal arch and the half-barrel vaults and oven vaults of the presbytery (of the best Romanesque style in Castile) have been preserved. It is located in an incomparable and solitary spot, next to the river Riaza.
There is also a reserve for birds of prey and carrion-eaters, and several natural caves, such as the Búho, Cazorra and Murcielaguera caves.
Also typical of Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela are the underground cellars.

It goes without saying that you cannot miss a visit to the “Hoces del Riaza” Nature Reserve and its visitor centre, the “Casa del Parque“. Nor can you miss one of the unique trees of the Ribera del Duero, the White Willow of Montejo.
