Museum of the Ex-Collegiate Church of Santa Ana
Peñaranda de Duero
About
Presiding over the Plaza Mayor of Peñaranda de Duero stands the majestic former Abbot’s Collegiate Church, now the Museum of the Ex-Collegiate Church of Santa Ana.
The works, financed by Doña María Enríquez de Cárdenas (widow of Francisco de Zúñiga) and her son, began in 1540 and lasted for two centuries. Its original layout was designed by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón and Pedro de Resines. The Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical styles are combined in this magnificent work, whose façade features the image of Santa Ana, the patron saint of the parish, and the coats of arms of the Zúñiga and Avellaneda families.
Inside, the neoclassical altarpiece that presides over the main altar, designed by Ventura Rodríguez in 1783, stands out, with a high relief dedicated to Saint Anne, framed by four columns on whose base are the coats of arms of the founders. Other elements of interest are a 17th century articulated recumbent Christ and a beautiful carving of the Nazarene. The church also houses a curious collection of relics, arranged in neoclassical altarpieces, brought from Italy when the Counts of Peñaranda passed through those lands, as well as a portable campaign altar that they took to the wars in Naples.
