New Duero Bridge in Peñafiel
Peñafiel
About
It is one of the eight bridges that Peñafiel currently has and was built on the current VA-101 road that links Peñafiel with Pesquera de Duero after the Spanish Civil War.
In the 1930s, the Duero was still bridged by the old stone bridge, which showed clear signs of weakness, particularly in its central pillars. The need for communication between different war fronts made it necessary to replace it with the new bridge that is still in use today.
It was designed and directed by the civil engineer César Villalba Granda (back in the 1940s) and its construction was the first time that reinforced concrete was used for a public work of this magnitude in the Peñafiel region.
Technical characteristics: three concrete arches with a 40-metre span with an intermediate deck arch solution, bridge length 156 metres and piers of 13.20 and 10.09 metres high. Similar in structure and design are the Narcea Bridge in Requejo (Asturias) and the Ebro Bridge in Mora (Tarragona).
The beautiful rationalist architecture of the “New Duero Bridge”, flanked by large arches over both railings, softens the robust appearance of a work that was built as a result of a terrible war.
