Old Duero Bridge of Peñafiel
Peñafiel
About
The so-called “Old Duero Bridge” in Peñafiel has clear medieval elements, but the width of its arches and the magnitude of the work may date back to a Roman antecedent.
The road from Esguevillas to Peñafiel crossed the river Duero over this old bridge which is in deplorable condition, both in terms of the width of the bridge and the ruinous and dangerous state of its supports and vaults, although, contrary to all expectations, the work is still standing, corroborating the assertion that “works tend not to fall down”. As we have already mentioned in point 4, a “New Duero Bridge” was built to alleviate the need to communicate both banks of the river during the Spanish Civil War.
Its ruinous state threatens to destroy forever one of Peñafiel’s oldest monuments and a witness to a large part of the town’s history. Its recovery must become an urgent imperative for our authorities.
With respect to the path we are walking along the Senda del Duero, in this section it changes banks, fording the Duero river by this “Old Duero Bridge”, crossing the VA-101 road by an underpass under the “New Duero Bridge” and arriving (by the third wooden footbridge built in 2013 for the GR 14 Path) at the confluence of the Duero and Duratón rivers, which join their waters before reaching Peñafiel.
