Olivares de Duero
Olivares de Duero
About
Located on the right bank of the Duero River, just 38 kilometres from Valladolid, is the riverside municipality of Olivares de Duero.
The parish church of San Pelayo houses true artistic treasures, treasures created by such important names as Juan de Juni, the workshops of Diego Valentín Díaz and Gregorio Fernández, or the Master of Olivares. This Gothic-style church has been an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 1979.
Also of note is the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Virgen de la Estrella, within the town centre, where the image of the patron saint is kept. The village has a somewhat peculiar house called “El Mesón”, and it is said that some kings, such as Charles V, spent some time there.
Olivares de Duero is linked to the left bank of the Duero and to Quintanilla de Onésimo by the magnificent Renaissance bridge with seven arches, a bridge built by the Catholic Monarchs in the 16th century, which is currently the only link between one bank of the Duero and the other from Tudela to Peñafiel.
The natural environment of Olivares de Duero allows you to enjoy hiking along routes such as the Ribera, Atalaya or Solanas.
The town is decked out for the arrival of its two main festivals:
- San Pelayo (26 June): the main festivities.
- La Virgen de la Estrella (the Saturday closest to 22 September): after having taken the patron saint up to the church, on the day of the fiesta she is taken down and the poles are auctioned off to be carried.
There is a dish that is still cooked as always, the so-called “Plato de la Abuela” made with lean meat, chorizo, egg and potatoes.
Olivares de Duero has a seasonal TOURISM OFFICE.
Olivares de Duero is known by the locals: “olivareños”.
