About

About 5 kilometres from San Esteban de Gormaz and belonging to this municipality, you will find this riverside town where the most outstanding features are:

  • The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, where you can still see a baptismal font from the 13th century.
  • The Hermitage of San Hipólito, of whose construction the legend tells that the image of San Hipólito appeared in a thyme grove between Ines and Olmillos: a neighbour of Ines wanted to take it to him but the donkey would not advance and, when he wanted to realise, the Saint had returned to the place where he had appeared. That is why the hermitage was built in that place, where the apparition took place. Curiously, this hermitage had a saint’s keeper, who, in turn, was in charge of the boat on the Duero River that took travellers to Burgo de Osma and vice versa.

Two Latin inscriptions dedicated to the indigenous goddess Drusuna have been found in Olmillos. It is not in vain that the Roman road from Uxama to Tiermes used to pass through the area. As well as the famous“Ruta de la Lana“, a trade route that transported wool from La Alcarria and cloth from Cuenca, honey and cereal to Medina del Campo and Burgos, and which today crosses the town until it reaches Mecerreyes (Burgos), being one of the points of passage for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

The rivers Rejas and Pentecilla pass through Olmillos. In addition, here you can see one of the unique trees of the Ribera del Duero, the Plátano de Sombra de la ermita de San Hipólito (Shade plane tree of the hermitage of San Hipólito).

This small village is important for being a pioneer in the modernisation of irrigation, creating, during the harvesting season, the employment of some 500 seasonal workers. Since 2008, large companies dedicated to the sale of horticultural products have leased this land to change from the traditional cultivation of beetroot and maize to strawberries, spinach, Brussels sprouts, artichokes, different varieties of lettuce, peas, green beans, etc…. All this on an area of 1,400 hectares.

Olmillos celebrates its fiestas on 13 and 14 August in honour of its patron saint, San Hipólito.
