Olmos de Peñafiel
About
The entrance to the village of Olmos de Peñafiel is impressive due to the presence of numerous poplars that populate the lower parts of the Botijas stream, where there is a small picnic area with a fountain. It is said that this was a land of many elm trees (hence its name) and that a disease devastated these lands, killing off the entire plant species.
Olmos de Peñafiel occupies the centre of the Botijas valley and has magnificent views from its viewpoints. According to history, this is where Juan Martín “El Empecinado” was captured.
In the centre of the village and at the end of a street that turns into a slope, is the Church of Santa Engracia (from the 16th century, built in stone in the Gothic style). Another religious building located next to the cemetery is the Ermita del Cristo del Amparo (Chapel of Cristo del Amparo).
Olmos de Peñafiel celebrates its fiestas in honour of San Antolín on the last weekend in August and also in honour of Santa Engracia (16 April). They also celebrate San Isidro (15 May).
