About

The church of Honrubia de la Cuesta called San Cristóbal is a temple built according to the canons of Baroque architecture of the second half of the 17th century. It is possible that it replaced an older church, probably Romanesque.

It seems that the building was originally designed as a Latin cross, although the project was left unfinished and the arms of the transept were not raised. At the foot of the nave, attached to the western gable, is a two-storey tower, with masonry walls with ashlars reinforcing corners and openings.

The lower section is massive and ends in a marked cornice that supports the upper section, where large semicircular arches open up to house the bells. The original tower collapsed and was rebuilt in the early 1940s.

A lower volume was attached to the south side of the church, which serves as an atrium with two side rooms. The doorway of the atrium has three depressed archivolts on small columns with small capitals. From its appearance, it could date from the 16th century, and would belong to a reform of the original church. The atrium protects the only entrance to the church from the inclemency of the Serrezuela climate.

Inside the nave, the choir is located at the foot of the church, over a large segmental arch that cantilevers from one side to the other. The nave space is covered with a triangular lunette vault with two sash arches that divide it into three bays. The vault is decorated with simple geometric motifs, and the space that was to be the centre of the transept is covered with a half-orange dome on pendentives. The chancel is short and elevated. It is also covered with a lunette vault.

The high altar is neoclassical, with very pure and architectural forms. The niche that houses the titular saint is located above the shrine that shelters the tabernacle. Saint Joseph and Saint Anthony of Padua appear on two lateral pedestals.

In the nave are the images of the Dolorosa and the Virgen del Lirio, patron saint of the village. On the north side of the “transept”, there is a stone pulpit and a neoclassical altarpiece with Christ crucified. Opposite, there is another twin altarpiece of the Virgin of the Rosary from 1894.

A semicircular arch gives access to a chapel with an altarpiece with the images of Santa Águeda and the Niño de la Bola and a Romanesque style baptismal font with its characteristic flower chalice shape, with thick and very marked petals. In the sacristy, attached to the north side of the presbytery, there is a stone washbasin.
