About

The Parish Church of San Juan Bautista in the riverside town of Guzmán was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Monument in 1991. It stands at the heart of the village as a link between the different neighbourhoods of Guzmán.

In 1577 it began to fulfil its parish functions, although the church was not finished until the middle of the 17th century (1650), and in 1755 in its entirety. The project was begun by the master stonemason Sebastián del Castillo, who was replaced in 1558 by his son-in-law Juan Vélez, master stonemason of the Diocese of Sigüenza.

Between 1628 and 1641, a second phase of construction was carried out by Sancho de la Riva and Francisco de Fonfrida from Trasmerán, who built another two sections of the ship and erected the tower and spindle up to the level of the body of the church.

While this was going on, D. In the middle years of the century, Cristóbal de Guzmán y Santoyo Beltrán erected a family funerary chapel to the north of the building, in the first section of the gospel nave, and at the same time completed the tower with a bell tower.

The work on the church was paid for by the people of Guzmán, with all the neighbours contributing to its construction.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the entrance doorway and a new sacristy were built. In the middle of the century, the prestigious Basque master builder Domingo de Ondátegui built a reinforcement abutment towards the atrium, between the second and third sections of the aisle.

The last area erected was the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Rosario to the south of the ship, the first bay of the epistle aisle.

In 1794 , Antonio Orrutía from Alava and Francisco Labrador (a resident of Quintanamanvirgo) tiled the entire building. Thus, after almost two and a half centuries of building work, the parish church was completed and is now in an adequate state of conservation, the result of the interest of the Guzmán community and the restoration initiatives of the 1990s.

The church is impressive for its grandeur. In the last years of the 20th century, its electric lighting prolongs its function as a landmark in the serene Castilian landscape at night.
