Peñaranda de Duero
Peñaranda de Duero
About
In a land as rich in history and culture as Castile and León, it is not easy to stand out. However, in Peñaranda de Duero all the necessary elements are combined to be able to affirm that we are in the presence of one of the medieval jewels of Castilla y León, being a HISTORICAL SITE since 1974 and housing five monuments declared Sites of Cultural Interest.
Its town centre brings together valuable examples of popular Castilian architecture, as well as urban pieces of great interest: emblazoned houses, cobbled streets, the Palace of Avellaneda, the Ex-Collegiate Church of Santa Ana, the Castle, its walls with the “Puerta de las Monjas”, its hamlet with adobe or wooden façades and the Plaza Mayor which houses the Rollo de Justicia.
Also noteworthy are:
- La Botica, a pharmacy dating from the beginning of the 18th century, which has been maintained and guarded by eight generations of pharmacists from the Jimeno family, being the oldest active pharmacy in Spain.
- The Convent of El Carmen, founded in the 16th century, which can only be visited from the outside.
- The Monastery of the Franciscan Conceptionist Mothers, home to this community.
- The Museum-Smith’s Shop of Jose Cerezo ( 947 55 20 69).
- The Hermitage of the Virgen de los Remedios.
- The underground cellar “La Cárcel”, under the Town Hall.
This village in Burgos is located on the right bank of the river Arandilla. On the other bank, almost 3 km away, we find Casanova, which is currently a neighbourhood belonging to Peñaranda de Duero.
It celebrates its festivities in honour of St. James the Apostle (25th July) and St. Anne (26th July), patron saint of the collegiate church and therefore the parish feast day. In addition, on 8 September the protagonist is Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, patron saint of Peñaranda. On the other hand, it is very popular among the women of Peñaranda to celebrate Santa Águeda (5 February). The Noche de Velas (Night of Candles) (August) is a special event, making this town even more magical. Through this municipality runs the Sendero del Bosque y del Pinar.
In 2018 the municipality of Peñaranda de Duero was declared “The most beautiful village of Castilla y León” in the category of less than 1.000 inhabitants by Radio Televisión de Castilla y León.
Peñaranda de Duero has a TOURISM OFFICE for visitors.
