Plaza del Coso
Peñafiel
About
The Plaza del Coso de Peñafiel, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1999, is a public space created in the Middle Ages to host bullfighting festivities and continues to serve this purpose today.
Access to the enclosure is via two streets (north and west). It measures 75 metres by 46 metres, occupying a rectangular area of some 3,500 m2, and is made up of 48 two- and three-storey buildings made of adobe, stone and wood. In these buildings in the Plaza del Coso, there is an abundance of wooden balconies heavily decorated with motifs such as leaves, flowers or fruit (guardamalleta is the name given to these openwork wooden decorations). These balconies are converted during the Fiestas of Nuestra Señora and San Roque into boxes from which the owners of the right of view can watch the bullfighting festivities.
Created for the celebration of bullfighting shows, it is used for other events throughout the year, such as the Bajada del Ángel (Descent of the Angel) on Easter Sunday, a festival declared to be of National Tourist Interest.
The Plaza del Coso is a major tourist attraction in Peñafiel, but it is even more so from 14th to 18th August, the dates on which the Fiestas of Nuestra Señora and San Roque are held, declared to be of Regional Tourist Interest. On the occasion of the fiestas, a bullring is set up inside the bullring to allow the release of bulls in the village style, i.e. with one bull inside the ring and another on the outside, a peculiarity that has given the Peñafiel fiestas a fame that goes beyond national borders.
In addition, the Plaza del Coso has another peculiarity: it preserves the customary law, based on the custom of “derecho de vistas” or“balcón de servidumbre“. This concession allows you to watch the festivities of the patron saint’s fiestas of San Roque from the balconies of the Plaza del Coso, whether or not you are the owner of the house.
The best way for the visitor to get an idea of what happens in the Plaza del Coso during the San Roque festivities and the Descent of the Angel is to enter Cosovisión, a space set up in one of the houses in the square where an entertaining and exciting video of these two important events for the town is shown.
